News from Papua New Guinea - ITTC 42

During the 42nd session of the International Tropical Timber Council, which took place in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea last week, the Civil Society Advisory Group hosted a side-event on sustainable forest management in Papua New Guinea, organized by RRI Partner FPCD:

Steps Toward Sustainability - Institutional Conditions and Market Opportunities for Sustainable Forest Management in PNG. What civil society is doing to foster solutions to various issues facing forests.

In addition, PNG civil society presented to delegates a review of ITTO projects in PNG. This review found that few of the 12 projects in PNG have been independently evaluated, and the findings of were largely negative.

Also during the weeks events, FPCD and the Madang Forest Resource Owners were awarded with a "Well Managed Forest Certification" under the Forest Stewardship Council standard. This is a significant milestone achievement for FPCD and the Madang Forest Resource Owners, as this certificate denotes a high-level of sustainable community-level management.
